Deborah, Bethany & Lily: Friendship Through Art and Music

Two people drawing together outdoors with text: Creativity, Friendship, Belonging. Different Abilities, Brighter Together

Bethany and Lily are sisters with Down syndrome. Deborah is a PhD student studying Chemistry, a gifted artist, and a Light in the Well performer. At first, they were simply brought together through art-making and music.

But something beautiful began to grow.

When Bethany and Lily felt shy or unsure, Deborah would sit beside them. She would encourage them, play with them, and patiently invite them into the creative experience. There was no pressure—just friendship, one small moment at a time.

Over time, something changed. Bethany and Lily began looking for Deborah. They ask about her. They want to be near her. And on stage, their joy is unmistakable: they hug Deborah, celebrate with her, and share the music together.

What began as an art activity and musical performance became a relationship.

This is the kind of impact Light in the Well hopes to create: spaces where people with and without disabilities can discover one another, build trust, and become genuine friends.
