Our Commitment to Web Accessibility

Building bridges between people with and without disabilities is at the heart of everything we do at Light in the Well — and that includes our website. We are committed to providing a fully accessible website experience for all users of all abilities, including those who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers, screen magnification software, voice recognition, and alternative keyboard or switch input devices to navigate the web.

Standards we follow

We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), currently versions 2.1 and 2.2, at Level AA, as our guiding standard. These are internationally recognized guidelines covering a wide range of recommendations for making web content usable by people with disabilities. As we add new pages and features, we check them with automated scans and a keyboard before they go live.

Ongoing testing and improvement

Accessibility is an ongoing process, not a one-time fix. We check our website regularly, including:

  • Automated scans of every published page, including the axe-core testing engine, which also checks text color contrast against WCAG AA thresholds;
  • Keyboard checks of new interactive features, such as menus, tabs, and image lightboxes, as we build them; and
  • A review of image alternative text across the site.

Automated tools only catch a portion of possible accessibility issues. We fix what we find as part of our regular website maintenance, and we welcome reports of anything we’ve missed.

Accessibility features on our website

The following are among the accessibility features built into our website:

  • Descriptive alternative text for meaningful images, including our event poster images;
  • A logical heading structure and semantic landmarks to support navigation with assistive technology;
  • Keyboard-operable navigation, menus, and interactive elements, with visible focus indicators;
  • Text and interface colors chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast requirements;
  • Descriptive link text and clearly labeled form fields;
  • A “skip to content” link for keyboard users;
  • A responsive design that supports browser zoom and text resizing; and
  • An optional on-site accessibility toolbar, provided by UserWay, that lets visitors adjust font size, contrast, and other display preferences. We treat this toolbar as a helpful supplement — never a replacement — for accessible, well-structured underlying code.

Known limitations

Some content on our site comes from third parties and is embedded in our pages, including our Givebutter donation form, YouTube videos, and Instagram posts on some story pages. We don’t control that code, and parts of it may not fully meet WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA. If any of it gets in your way, please let us know using the contact details below.

We also link to third-party websites, such as partner organizations, ticketing pages, and social media, and we cannot guarantee their accessibility.

Accessibility feedback and contact

We welcome your comments, questions, and feedback on our website’s accessibility. If you are using assistive technology and run into difficulty using any part of our site, please let us know:
